In what way were the ladies of the missionary society hypocrites?

The ladies of the missionary society were hypocrites because while they preached about helping others and doing good deeds, they were judgmental and exclusionary towards people in their own community who did not fit their narrow definitions of what was considered appropriate behavior or beliefs.
