Since I don't know what story you're referring to, I can give you a general example of a simile (as opposed to a metaphor). Let's say we're talking about a woman who is dark and dangerous.

"The woman turned her head towards me and the gaze in her eyes were like black clouds before a thunderstorm."

Basically, if you directly compare or explicitly describe something by pointing out its similarities to something else using the connective Words "as if" or "like" between the subject and the thing you're comparing the subject to, then it's a simile.

But, if you imply or otherwise neglect to make the comparison between two different kinds of things clear (using "as if" or "like" or another Word or Words that have the same meaning) to the reader, then it falls under the more general category of "metaphor."

Example: "The woman turned her head towards me and the gaze in her eyes were like black clouds before a thunderstorm."

Without the "like," the sentence is no longer a simile.
