What are couplings used for?

Shaft couplings are used to couple or attach two shafts together, typically in an assembly where one shaft rotates and drives the other shaft -- for example, if a motor were to drive a pump, there would be a coupling between the two shafts.

Shaft couplings can be rigid (accommodating no misalignment) or flexible (accommodating some angular and/or radial misalignment of the two shafts). More information on various types of couplings is available here:
