How do you beat the 1st boss in the dark world in a link to the past?

You can beat him in three ways:

1. Cast Din's Fire and turn around since he will fade into the ground and reappear behind you.

2. If you run out of magic use the Megaton hammer since Dark Link cannot imitate that weapon. You'll connect with more hits but you could also take more damage as a result.

3. Equip the biggoron's sWord and start jabbing. Thing is Dark Link will freeze you, jump on your sWord and take a swing at you. You won't be able to block it either.
