What was the city of Tenotitlan?

Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the Aztec Empire, located on an island in Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. It was one of the largest and most impressive cities in the world at the time of the Spanish conquest in the early 16th century. Today, the modern-day city of Mexico City is built on top of the ruins of Tenochtitlan.
