Trial pieces for a resumption of the denomination were struck in 1964 but never released.
New copper-nickel dollars were minted starting in 1971. The size was reduced in 1978. The denomination was again discontinued in 1981. Production resumed in 1999. The Sacajawea design was introduced in 2000, using manganese brass instead of copper-nickel. In 2007 the Presidential Series was introduced and is manufactured along with the Sacajawea design.
