How did the religion Sikhism spread from its place of origin?

Guru Nanak was born into a Hindu family, he then was visited by God and also disagreed with some of the Hindu beliefs. Although he disagreed and the two religions are different Sikhism evolved from Hinduism. This is one we have Hindu Punjabi's as most of the Hindu Punjabi's believe in both the 10 guru's and in Hindu gods and goddesses. I know this because my own family is like this.
