Earthquake depth is generally inversely related to the distance from an ocean trench. As tectonic plates converge at ocean trenches, subduction zones can generate deep-focus earthquakes, often occurring at depths greater than 300 kilometers. The closer an earthquake is to the trench, the more likely it is to be associated with these deeper seismic events. Conversely, earthquakes further from the trench tend to be shallower, reflecting the different tectonic processes at work.
