How was Ray Middleton found to play Superman?

Ray Middleton never actually played Superman. He was one of the celebrity judges in the Superboy/Supergirl contest held on Superman Day at the World's Fair on July 3, 1940. If you check the Superman Through the Ages website you can find a photo sent in by William Aronis, the winner of the Superboy contest. It shows Aronis standing next to celebrity judge, Ray Middleton. He is clearly not the same person that played Superman at the fair. They even part there hair on opposite sides. Middleton was a well known Broadway star at the time. It would not have made sense to use a known actor to introduce Superman to the young fans. The true identity of the man in the tights at the World's Fair remains unknown. Nostalgia King
