How was the Roanoke originally financed?

The Roanoke colony, one of the first English settlements in North America, was financed by a group of London merchants known as the "Adventurers" in the late 16th century. The venture was backed by Sir Walter Raleigh who obtained a charter from Queen Elizabeth I. The colonists were expected to establish a profitable colony in the New World.
