Bartolomé de las Casas was a Spanish Dominican friar and missionary who became a prominent advocate for the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Americas during the early 16th century. He initially participated in the encomienda system but later renounced it and worked tirelessly to expose the abuses faced by Native Americans under Spanish colonial rule. His writings and lobbying efforts contributed to the enactment of the Laws of the Indies, which aimed to protect Indigenous rights and improve their treatment. De las Casas is often regarded as one of the first advocates for human rights in the New World.
