Why have interest groups increased in recent years?

Cynical Answer: Because it was realized that the power of political office can be purchased, thus the rise of PACs and the half-hearted attempt by politicans to regulate campaign spending. Benevolent answer: Mass Communication has made it easier for people who share interests and belief systems to get together and communicate with one another and/or the rest of the world.
