The South did not have many factories. They only had tobacco, cotton, etc. so they had to trade for the things they needed instead of being able to make it themselves. They had a shortage of shoes, rations, and clothing. They did not have enough food partway through the war. The South also did not have enough recruits to replenish the dead soldiers.
