During inhalation, we breathe in oxygen from the environment into our lungs, where it diffuses into the bloodstream. The oxygen is then carried by red blood cells to the rest of the body's tissues. Carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular metabolism, is picked up by the blood and transported back to the lungs, where it is exhaled out of the body during exhalation.
