The president's job in a crisis (no matter who the president is) includes appearing calm and in control. In the case of the Bin Laden mission, it was top secret, and only a handful of people knew about it. Thus, any deviation from his normal weekend routine would cause suspicion and get reporters asking questions. Thus, the president attended a dinner, and earlier in the day, he was seen around the White House acting as if there was nothing out of the ordinary going on. When the time was right, the details of the mission were shared with the American public, but until he knew that the goals of the mission had been achieved and the Seal Team was safe, he did not do anything to tip off the media or call anything about the mission into question.

It should be noted that a closer look at the photo in the situation room does not show the president in a Golf shirt, nor does it show others dressed formally. Many of the people in the room were dressed casually; some of the men wore ties that had been loosened, but others were just in casual shirts. I enclose a link to the official photo.
