Carbohydrates (or saccharides), that mean "carbon hydrate", stems from chemical composition, which is roughly (C.H2O)n, where n > = 3. The basic units of carbohydrates are known as monosaccharides.

Lipids have as a major part of their structure long hydrocarbon chains that may be branched or unbranched, straight or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated (with double bonds in the polycarbonate chain).
