The West Indian Seal, better known as the Caribbean Monk Seal, was doomed the moment it was discovered by Columbus in 1494.
Since the discovery of the seals, they were exploited by humans for their skins and oils.
In modern times the issue was made even worse by the fishing industry because they were becoming trapped in fishing nets and drowned or they were killed by fishermen racing them to the best fishing spots.
