What is the difference between SATA 1 and SATA 3?

The main difference is transfer speed, if you for instance a new solid state drive it a sat 1 port it will be limited in speed, still fast but not the maximum performance you could get out of it,

For a conventional Hard drive you won't notice the difference though.

All sata devices are backward compatible so theres no worries there
