How do you know if you have a sata or ide DVD drive in your PC without opening the case. Or if I have to open the case what does each one look like?

Well, in Linux it is very easy to tell. If /dev/hda is your main harddrive, then you are using IDE. If it is /dev/sda, then it is either SATA or SCSI.
