As the baby rattlesnake (all snakes) grows larger, it periodically shreds (slouches) its old skin. Its new skin hardens to become the outer larger skin. This slouching happens through out its life. In the case of the rattlesnake, each slouching leaves a ring at the tail. It is this collection of rings that the rattlesnakes vibrates to warn off any danger.
