From the Hebrew root Word mashach, meaning smear, and so anoint. Messiah means anointed or anointed one. The Greek equivalent is Khristos, or Christ.

the Messiah is the one awaited by the Jews to lead them to a great victory over their enemies and lead them to glory...It is part of their faith...They do not believe Jesus is the Messiah but that they still await their messiah.
