Each year since 1883 a College Football champion has been declared. Although the method has evolved over the years the tradition is carried on today with an NCAA Division 1A Football Champion being compiled by the BCS computers. Below are some of the other selection mechanisms used:

Helms Athletic Foundation (H) 1883-1935

The Dickinson System (D) 1924-40

The Associated Press (AP) 1936-present,

United Press International (UPI) 1958-90,

USA Today/CNN (CNN) 1991-96,

USA Today/ESPN (ESPN) 1997-present

BCS selection process Notre Dame leads this category with 12, winning in 1924, 1929, and 1930 for Coach Knute Rockne, 1938 for Coach Elmer Layden, 1943, 1946, 1947, and 1949 for Coach Frank Leahy, 1966 and 1973 for Coach Ara Parsegian, 1977 for Coach Dan Devine, and 1988 for Coach Lou Holtz. Close behind are ... Yale University with 11 (all prior to 1910), Alabama with 9, and Oklahoma with 7.
