Why do some unrelated people have the same last name?

There could be many reasons, one example being many last names (e.g. Smith, Carpenter, Farmer, Miller, Cook, Boatman, Brewer, Butcher, Potter, Shepherd, Shoemaker, Tanner, Clark, Wright) came from occupations that were very common and unrelated ancestors of those people once had the same occupation.
