What does jail braking an iPod touch do to the the iPod touch?

It lets u get cool themes and backgrounds for free, free apps for free, (not all of the Apple ones but very close!), and everybody thinks viruses will pop up but they dont. ive had mine jail broken 4 three years now and nothing happened!
