How did Siam advance during the time of imperialism?

Thailand (then known as Siam) resisted the rule of western imperialist countries partly because it's rulers had not underestimated the western power, and partly because they carefully avoided incidents that might have provoked invasion. although they had to make some unequal treaties, they still retained their independence and moved on to slowly modernize Thailand.
