Is vertabrates and invertebrates a classification?

Invertebrates are animals without any back bone. They don't have any skeleton either. They comprise 97% percent of all living animals. The bulk of these came from the insect and worm families. Sponges and mollusks are also invertebrates.

This group is of classical importance since time of Aristotle .It is not a valid taxonomic category .
