How are rap music and poetry the same?

Many believe that Hip Hop is a larger genre, and is often used to describe "Black" culture in America, whereas "rappers" often use lyrical rhymes set to music and or beats, and is often integrated into Hip Hop as a whole as well as a sub genre. Just as Metal is a sub genre of "rock" so rap is a genre of hip hop.
