thing as Roman classical civilisation. There is not such a thing as

classical civilisation either. The term is classical,

period/age/era or classical antiquity. It refers to the cultural

period in the history of the Mediterranean Sea when the culture of

the Greeks and Romans became intermingled through the cultural

influence of the former on the latter. It is therefore related to

the Greco-Roman world. The Greeks also had a strong influence of

the eastern part of the Roman Empire (the eastern Mediterranean)

because they had ruled this area for several centuries before the

arrival of the Romans. Greek was the lingual franca in this area.

The education of Roman elite men was both in Latin and Greek and

these men were fluent in Greek.
