What food becomes a dietary staple is dependent upon what foods are available and will grow well and in sufficient quantities in a particular geographic region. For example, rice grows well in warm wet climates ( southern USA, China, India) whereas potatoes grow well with less heat and moisture (North central USA, Ireland) .
