Requesting a New Category on WikiAnswers Is there a special category of interest that you have that is not listed? We are always open to new ideas and would like to hear yours.

You cannot open a category on your own. It must be requested using the form posted in the discussion area.

The way it works:

When you fill out the form, it goes straight to a spreadsheet. The category team reviews the spreadsheet regularly, usually once a week. They decide if the requests is a good fit for WikiAnswers. There are several factors that go into this decision, not just numbers. If it is approved, a member of the category team will add it to the live site. We try to get them all in as quickly as we can, but the process itself can take some time. We do look over each and every single request we receive on the form.

Some things we ask for:

  • Your username
  • What you would like to do (add, move, rename, etc)
  • A description for new categories (this appears at the top of the category's page when it is created)
  • We need to know how many questions there are on the requested subject. We will verify this number at some point in the process.
  • In some cases, we ask why. This is to help us see why a category may be better off with your suggestion.

A couple of quick tips:

To make your search numbers more accurate, use quotations. For example, if you want to search for Mary Had a Little Lamb, without quotation, it will pull up everything with each of those Words. However, if you use quotations and search "Mary Had a Little Lamb," it will only pull up the exact phrase.

When we ask for a category description, we need a few lines about what the category is. This will go at the top of the category page after it is created. A good description could be something like:

Mary Had a Little Lamb is an American nursery rhyme. It was written by Sarah Josepha Hale, and published in 1830.
