How did St. Juan Diego become a saint?

Juan Diego had a series of apparitions of the Blessed Virgin under the name of the Virgin of Guadalupe. She chose him to be her special emissary to Bishop Zumaraga of Mexico City to request a shrine be built on that spot devoted to her.
