Why was the union jack created?

The Union Jack was created in 1606 to represent the union of England and Scotland under King James VI and I. It combined the crosses of St George (England) and St Andrew (Scotland) into a single flag. The design was later modified in 1801 to include the cross of St Patrick, representing Ireland, following its union with Great Britain.
