At first it was a pretty good influence. East African people combined their ancient beliefs and superstitions with the new Islamic faith, and it was all very relaxed. The clan system was more important to, for example, Somali people than Islam was. Then, with the arrival of the Muslim Brotherhood in approximately the 1980s, everything changed. Islam became more demanding, more militant, more oppressive of women. It enhanced the status of men while requiring total submission from women. Imams preached unceasingly, and everyone was required to obey their (the Imam's) interpretations of Quran. When this dreadful oppression combined with the already aggressive and competitive clan system, Somalia fell into troubled times which have become worse as the years have gone by. The country has now been wrecked by both Islam and the clan system.
