Why are pitbulls so protective of their home?

Depending on how loyal a pit bull is to its owner, a pit can be defensive, but will calm down once they see their master is alright. Unfortunately, people use pit bulls only as guard dogs to scare people away. This is a wrong use of the breed and only reestablishes its reputation.
