The pueblo that is now Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781. It was established by Spanish settlers and originally named "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles" (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels). The settlement was part of Spain's efforts to secure its claims in California and to promote agricultural development in the region.
