- in eukaryotic cells it is distributed over several linear chromosomes contained in an organelle called the nucleus
- in prokaryotic cells most of it is contained in one circular chromosome with small amounts distributed over several circular plasmids (there is no nucleus)
- in viruses it is contained in one usually linear chromosome (a few very small viruses use RNA instead of the DNA used by all other organisms)
In all cases it is called the
genome of that organism.
