What does the word deselect mean?

I use "deselect" in my technical manuals to indicate that the user should select something else or nothing at all.

Example

On the desktop of many operating systems (Linux, Windows, Mac...) you can select an item with a single click and you deselect by clicking where there is no item (an 'empty' part of the desktop.
