Why does my hayward pool pump sp1515 lose it's prime after a few seconds and quits pumping water?

My sp1515-z-1-esc does the exact same thing when it sucks just a small bit of air from the intake hose from the pool to the pump, it took me a little while to figure it out. I made sure the connections were clean then I added another hose clamp to each fitting and tightened them up. Now even if I start up the pump with some air in it, the air is quickly pumped out.
