Black History Month was first celebrated in February 1926, initiated by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Woodson chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both significant figures in African American history. The observance aimed to recognize and promote the contributions of Black individuals to American society and history. In 1976, it was officially recognized by the U.S. government as a month-long celebration.
