The southern states that seceded from the Union and formed the Confederacy during the Civil War were Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. These states sought to preserve the institution of slavery and assert their rights against what they viewed as federal overreach. The conflict between these states and the Union ultimately led to the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
