Why do country roads wind?

For various reasons:

• So the road builders can avoid building over land that someone else owns
• Because

  countrysidesare hilly and rocky. It's cheaper to build around the hilly-rocky bits than cut through them

• To control water to lessen erosion. Roads that wind have a natural flow pattern, allowing water to run off the road. Straight roads need drains because the water can't

  runoff them easily. Drains in a countryside would need constant clearning due to leaves and things clogging them up

• To slow people down. Studies have shown that drivers get very bored on straight roads, so they are more likely to lose track of their speed or fall asleep at the wheel. Winding roads keep the driver awake and active
