The carbonate anion has a charge of '2-' , and is shown as 'CO3^(2-) '.

NB Compare with the calcium cation 'Ca^(2+) '.

Notice the charges are the same numerical value but of opposite character. Hence they combine as 'CaCO3' , Calcium carbonate.
