My first recommendation would be to increase your physical activity (unless you are already very active). Take a few days and consider how much you walk/bike versus how often you sit and watch tv/use the internet. We recommend AT LEAST 30 minutes of exercise a day. That can be in really short bursts, like 10 minutes during lunch, 5 minutes between tv shows, etc. Park a little farther away, take the long way around the building, etc.

Based on your height and weight, eating about 1500 calories a day will be a safe amount for losing weight. Especially if you focus on exercising too. (You might not really lose much weight, but you'll gain some muscle mass and feel great/look toned!) Once you get to a weight you desire, continue to eat about 1800 calories per day, and if you are maintaining your weight, stay there. If you start gaining again, decrease it a little bit. If you are still losing weight and want to stop, eat a few more calories.
