Most likely on one of Cooks voyages to try and find the

"Great Southern Land" (Antarctica) not Australia, that the

ancient Greeks theorized should be there to "balance" the earth.

Although they might not have understood the science behind this

awe inspiring sight was probably the first time the Aurora Australis

was viewed by Europeans.
