What was used before dishwashers were invented?

(1) They used a stream and a rock or two from the bottom of the stream and soap....

(2) Following the stream-and-stone method, the washboard was developed. The washboard required the person to scrub the material up and down over the corrugated board, as the board stood in a washtub (about the size of a standard washing machine tub).

(3) Next came the washer with double-roller. This required a person to manually insert and crank wet, soapy material between the two rollers -- somewhat easier than pounding or scrubbing, but still not an easy task.
