The first braces were constructed in France. In the early 18th century, French dentist Pierre Fauchard is credited with introducing the concept of dental braces, which were designed to straighten teeth. He used a device called a "bandeau," a thin metal strip that helped align the teeth. The development of braces has evolved significantly since then, but Fauchard's contributions laid the groundwork for modern orthodontics.
