The Sahara is the largest desert in the world and it is in Africa.
In actual fact, the Sahara is only the largest hotdesert. The world's largest desert is the continent of Antarctica since a desert is defined as an area receiving less than 250 mm or 10 inches of precipitation per year. The Antarctic desert covers 13.9 million square kilometres, or almost 5.5 million square miles.
However, when most people think of deserts the implied thought is that they are sand based not ice based. It is also not known as the Antarctica Desert because it is not referred to as such in the text books.
