If I am not mistaken, the question should be "What is an independent variable?"

The answer is this: An independent variable is a variable whose results are independent of all the other variables measured in the data sets/experiment.

For an exaggerated example, if one were to perform Van de Graff Machine experiment where the values measured are Static Energy, Time, and The Number of Stars Present in the Sky, one would be likely to find the Statics Energy and Time would have a direct relationship whereas The Number of Stars Present in the Sky would have no relationship to Static Energy or Time.
