The first American village near Jamestown was called Powhatan. It was the capital of the Powhatan Confederacy, a group of Native American tribes in the Virginia area. Powhatan was named after the chief who led these tribes when the English settlers arrived in 1607. The village played a significant role in the interactions between Native Americans and the Jamestown colonists.
