Why would a cambodian baby wear dark brown strings around their wrists?

Hi there I guess your a Nursing student. I have just been googling to find the same answer too. The strings are tied around a persons wrists at important occasions such as birthdays, promotions, weddings and so forth. They are believed to "tie in the soul" so it doesn't get lost. They should never be cut off, they simply wear off in time. If the doctor had cut the strings, she would have jeopardized the infant's life from the Tepses' perspective. From Jodie
